Target GPA Calculator

Have a goal GPA in mind? Enter your current GPA, the credits you've completed, and how many credits you're taking this term - get the exact GPA you need to average to get there.
4.70
GPA you need this term
Not reachable in one term

Even a perfect 4.0 this term won't reach your goal. Try a lower goal or spread it across more terms.

How to work out the GPA you need this term

  1. 1Enter your current cumulative GPA.
  2. 2Enter the number of credits you've already completed.
  3. 3Enter your goal cumulative GPA.
  4. 4Enter how many credits you're taking this term.
  5. 5The calculator shows the GPA you need to average this term to reach your goal.

Set a goal, then reverse-engineer the term

Most GPA tools tell you where you are. This one tells you where you need to go. By working backward from your goal cumulative GPA, you get a single, concrete number to aim for this term - which makes it far easier to plan your course load and study time.

The math

Needed = (Goal × (Prior credits + Term credits) - Current GPA × Prior credits) ÷ Term credits. If the answer is above 4.0, your goal needs more than one term.

Once the term is underway, the Cumulative GPA Calculator shows your new overall GPA, and the Final Grade Calculator tells you what you need on each exam to hit the term GPA you're targeting. MyGrades keeps all of this live for every class. Get the app.

Frequently asked questions

How do I figure out what GPA I need this semester?

Multiply your goal GPA by your total credits (completed plus this term), subtract the points you've already earned, then divide by this term's credits. This tool does it instantly so you can see if your goal is realistic.

Why does the result say more than 4.0?

It means your goal can't be reached in a single term - even a perfect 4.0 falls short because your earlier credits weigh your average down. Aim for the goal over two or more terms instead.

Why is it harder to move my GPA later on?

The more credits you've completed, the more each new term is diluted by your history. Early on, one strong term moves your GPA a lot; with 100+ credits banked it barely nudges. That's why starting strong matters.

Can this help me get off academic probation?

Yes. Set your goal to your school's minimum (often 2.0) and the calculator shows the term GPA you need to climb back above it.
