Weighted vs unweighted - and why colleges look at both
Most US high schools report two GPAs. Your unweighted GPA shows how you did on a level playing field; your weighted GPA rewards taking harder Honors and AP/IB courses. Admissions officers often recalculate GPA their own way, so it helps to know both numbers going in.
How the boost works
On the weighted scale an A is worth 4.0 in a regular class, 4.5 in an Honors class, and 5.0 in an AP or IB class. Lower grades get the same boost. This calculator applies those boosts only in Weighted mode.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA puts every class on the same 4.0 scale no matter the difficulty. Weighted GPA gives harder classes a boost - typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB - so an A in AP Calculus can count as a 5.0.
How much do Honors and AP classes add?
The most common convention, used here, adds 0.5 grade points for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB. Some schools weight differently, so check your school's policy if your transcript looks different.
Can my weighted GPA be above 4.0?
Yes. With the AP/IB boost, a straight-A schedule of advanced classes can produce a weighted GPA up to 5.0. Unweighted GPA still tops out at 4.0.
How do I calculate GPA with different credit weights?
Each class is weighted by its credits, so a multi-credit class counts more toward your average. Set the credits for each class and the calculator does the credit-weighted math automatically.
